Sheriff David W. Hill is a native son of Nelson County, VA. His family has been living in and serving Nelson County since it's formation. Sheriff Hill's track record proves that he's service oriented and an achiever, expecting the same of our Sheriff's Office personnel.
Sheriff Hill has been married to Lindsey N. Hill for 17 years. Since being elected in 2015, Sheriff Hill and Lindsey are now parents to two young daughters, ages 5 and 4. Before being elected as Sheriff, he vowed to continue protecting our youth and citizens, he wants the same safety for for his children, family and friends.

Throughout his formative years, Sheriff Hill served alongside his peers in extracurricular programs such as the FFA and as a competitive athlete on sports teams.

Sheriff David W. Hill was an honor student at Ferrum College and was on the Ferrum Baseball Team.

M.Ed. School Counseling
Lynchburg College, Lynchburg, VA
While working full-time as a Narcotics Investigator, he took on a full case load of graduate level courses for several years. His goal was to return home to Nelson County and use his education and training to benefit the Nelson citizens.

Substitute Teacher
After undergraduate school, Sheriff David W. Hill served as a substitute teacher at Nelson Middle and Nelson County High School. He continued to fill in over the years as time allowed.
2004-2008
Nelson County Sheriff's Office
Sheriff David W. Hill attended Central Virginia Criminal Justice Academy and has maintained his DCJS law enforcement certification for the last 19 years. He started his career as a deputy with Nelson County Sheriff's Office under the administration of Sheriff Gary L. Brantley.
2008-2015
Amherst County Sheriff's Office
While attending Lynchburg College as a graduate student, he worked as a Field Operations Deputy under the administration of Sheriff L.J. "Jimmy" Ayers III. Shortly after joining the agency, Hill was promoted as a Investigator within the Narcotics and Street Crimes Division. After obtaining his M.Ed., he continued to serve as an Auxiliary Deputy with the Amherst Sheriff's Office.

Professional School Counselor
While serving as a Professional School Counselor in the Nelson County Public School System, he continued to see deficiencies within our community that affects families such as domestic violence and illegal drug activities. These encounters continued to fuel his internal desire to return to the Nelson Sheriff's Office one day as Sheriff and address the community's needs.

Sheriff Hill was elected in 2015 as a "True" Independent Sheriff. He was re-elected in 2019, now approaching the end of a second term. He is the first Nelson County Sheriff to become a VSIC Certified Sheriff and most recently obtained recertification through Virginia Sheriff's Institute and Virginia Commonwealth University.
Sheriff David W. Hill is devoted to serving the citizens of Nelson County.
