For over 35 years, Willie Hill proudly served as a Deputy in the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department. During that time, Willie worked his way through the ranks and was promoted from Sergeant to Lieutenant to Captain, the position he held until his retirement in January 2010. Along the way, Willie served in many capacities within the Sheriff’s Department. Beginning as a patrol deputy, Willie went on to become a member of the Department’s SWAT and SCUBA teams, served as Patrol Division Commander and later the Jail Commander in the Bessemer Division, taught new deputies at the Department’s training academy during Mel Bailey’s tenure as Sheriff, and was promoted to Academy Director by former Sheriff Jim Woodward.
Whether patrolling the roads of Jefferson County, serving on the Department’s tactical team, being Division Commander, or teaching new deputies, Willie has dedicated his career to protecting the people of Jefferson County and has proven that he has the ability to lead the men and women of the Sheriff’s Department.
Prior to joining the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, Willie served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps from 1969 to 1972. In his four years as a Marine, Willie was meritoriously promoted from Private to Corporal to Sergeant.
Willie holds a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and is a graduate of specialized training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Willie holds a Specialized Instructors Rating from the Alabama Police Officers Standards and Training Commission (APOST) which allows him to teach any law enforcement subject within the state of Alabama. He is also a member of the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers, the International Association of Law Enforcement Firearms Instructors, and is a certified Defensive Tactics Instructor.
Willie and his wife Tommie have been married for 41 years. They have 2 children and 4 grandchildren. Willie is a Jefferson County native, having grown up in the Minor community of West Jefferson. Willie resides in Morris and is a member of Enon Baptist Church.
